About this tool

Made for the task at hand.

Inspect and transport non-ASCII text in JavaScript-style notation. Encoding operates on UTF-16 code units, so supplementary characters become surrogate pairs; decoding also accepts braced code-point escapes.

How to use

  1. Enter readable Unicode text or a string containing backslash-u escapes.
  2. Choose non-ASCII escaping, full UTF-16 escaping, or decoding.
  3. Copy the escaped representation or reconstructed Unicode text.
Your work stays yours.

Common questions
Why does an emoji encode as two \u sequences?

Characters above U+FFFF are represented by a UTF-16 surrogate pair in JavaScript, producing two four-digit escapes.

Are malformed escape sequences rejected?

Unrecognized backslash sequences remain literal text. Syntactically valid braced escapes above U+10FFFF produce an explicit range error.
