About this tool

Made for the task at hand.

Debug encoding and byte-length limits with a per-code-point breakdown. The summary distinguishes user-entered Unicode code points from JavaScript UTF-16 code units and actual UTF-8 bytes.

How to use

  1. Paste the text whose encoding you want to inspect.
  2. Review the total code-point, UTF-16-unit, and UTF-8-byte counts.
  3. Read each row for the character, U+ code point, byte size, and hexadecimal UTF-8 sequence.
Your work stays yours.
Tool inputs are processed locally in your browser and are never sent to KitVerse servers. Clear the workspace when using a shared device.
Common questions
Why can an emoji count as two UTF-16 units?

Supplementary-plane characters are stored as surrogate pairs in JavaScript strings, even though they are one Unicode code point.

Does each table row always represent one visible grapheme?

No. Rows are Unicode code points. A visible grapheme can combine multiple code points, such as a base letter plus a combining mark.
